Breena Vardin (Celestial Toymaker)

Image
Here's a new gnome NPC, just in time for your Christmas-themed Dungeons and Dragons adventures. She's a Celestial Toymaker living the tinker life in Bytopia. Enjoy! (As a side note, the drawing is inspired by the tinker outfit from Neverwinter Online. And for full disclosure, this is sort of my character in that game.) Breena Vardin (Bree-nah VAR-din) "Here now. Why the long face? I have just the right thing to cheer you up." Breena (NG) is a spritely, 240-year-old female rock gnome who manufactures unique and quirky magical toys for all ages. Her reputation is such that items bearing her maker’s mark are prized delights. She sells her fancier creations at various high-end markets throughout the land as specialty goods. Breena is also the current incarnation of The Tinker Cousin (see The Tinker Cousin below), a legendary gnomish figure known for delivering gifts from her flying broom to those deserving of or in need of a little joy. She keeps this aspect...

Cloudskipper (Airship Captain)

Image
It's been a while since I last posted an NPC for you guys. So, here's one I put together. I can't believe it's not a gnome, but alas I must follow inspiration where it takes me. Enjoy. Cloudskipper (CLOUD-skipper) "(To The Flitting Crow ) Schwiiinnng! Crsssh. Don’t worry, she’ll hold together. Rooo-aarr. Eeee. You hear me, baby? Hold together. Boom. Boom. Boom.” Cloudskipper (CN) is a flamboyant, 25-year-old, male kenku who craves outlandish outfits, risky endeavors, and the freedom to follow whatever whim tickles his fancy. Despite his outgoing nature, he forms neither deep nor lasting friendships with the people who collide with his life. His relationships are governed more by formal agreement than by feelings of attachment. When he binds himself to any such accord, he honors it with an inspired tenacity and he expects others to do the same. Outside of these agreements, he holds no expectation of personal or professional loyalty. While he maintains pro...

Trickfinger Folkor (Divine Prankster

Image
Hello all. Well, another two weeks has zipped by and here I am once again with another gnome non-player character. This is a divine prankster, a gnome prestige class that appeared in Races of Stone , by David Noonan, Jesse Decker, and Michelle Lyons (2004).  Enjoy! Trickfinger Folkor ( TRICK-fin-ger FOLL-core ) "Pull my finger." Trickfinger (CG) is a mercurial, 167-year-old male forest gnome who delights in and excels at imparting wisdom through harmlessly devious pranks. Though a high-ranked cleric of Garl Glittergild, he claims no direct affiliation with any specific temple; neither does he call any one burrow his home. Rather, he sees himself as belonging to all temples and to all burrows, traveling only where Glittergold leads and staying only for as long as Glittergold wills. He offers the usual cleric services wherever he goes but he specializes in the “noble-has-no-clothes” and the “too-big-for-one’s-nose” life lessons. These lessons always come in the f...

Sourwind Hedskor (Gnome Alchemist)

Image
Here's another gnome NPC to use in your campaigns. Enjoy! Sourwind Hedskor (sour-WIND HEAD-score) “Separately, any one of these components could strip the skin off your face in a heartbeat. Combine them in exact proportions and you get a bracing beverage that will tickle your nose and make you the life of any party. Wait! Did I already add the toe-wort?" Sourwind (NG) is an awkward, 52-year-old, female rock gnome who channels the energy that most gnomes spend on socializing, eating, and pranking into alchemical research and experimentation instead. She runs a cluttered alchemist’s shop called Potions Plus where she concocts a variety of intoxicants, restoratives, fragrances, and other alchemical curiosities. Some are effective. Some are hokum. A small number are quite popular and always in demand. Almost all were accidental discoveries. Sourwind and her siblings all suffer from silent but particularly foul flatulence, the unfortunate result of an unwise prank he...

Shoor Purdi (Booyahg Drummer)

Image
I know I'm usually all about gnomes, but I'm trying something a little bit different with this post (while still being semi-related to gnomes). This is a goblin bard. She's an NPC I've used in my campaigns and with me now playing a goblin bard in another game I felt it was time to breathe some more life into this character. So, I hope you enjoy this one. Shoor Purdi ( SURE per-dee ) "The rhythm is gonna get you, one way or another.” Shoor Purdi (CN) is a frenetic, 24-year-old female goblin whose visceral drum performances inspire goblin forces and intimidate goblin foes. Purdi was born into the Lashers caste of her tribe where she quickly took to the drums used to communicate orders during combat. That talent was battle tested when a gnome horde blitzed the tribe in a vicious attempt to wipe it from existence. On that day, the stress of combat, her desire to save her tribe, and her hatred for the gnomes who were slaughtering her people awakened a wellspri...

Bloodfang Menren (Devotee of The Glutton)

Image
I know that the image projected in Dungeons and Dragons 5e regarding gnomes is that they're generally upbeat, good-natured folks. They're a little high strung and they get themselves into all sorts of trouble, but it's a fun sort of high-strung and a good kind of trouble. Sort of. If you dig a little into previous editions of D&D, however, you find a little more nuanced description. So, for this  NPC, I'm explorer the darker side of gnome society. I'll also be summoning a gnome deity that I haven't seen in the 5e releases so far. Beware! Bloodfang Menren (BLOOD-fang MEN-ren) "The Glutton will rip you, little gnome, and fill his belly with your innards.” Bloodfang (CE) is a cruel, 87-year-old, female whisper gnome who considers gnome civilization a plague that must be scoured from the land. Abandoned by her family when she just a little child and reject by her burrow for reasons she still doesn't understand, Bloodfang was left to scr...
