Making a DMs Guild Supplement

Image
And So It Began For a number of reasons, I haven’t released any new material on the DMs Guild since the last update to my Epic Gnomish Inventing . As 2018 approached its end, I began thinking about what I might put together for a new product that was both fun and useful. I really enjoyed creating Absurd Accouterment s and Bracing Beverages , both collections of magic items that have been well received on the DMs Guild. I also like The WhatNot Shop as both a locale in my homebrew games and a fictional purveyor of the unique items I’ve created in my supplements. This got me thinking that it might be time to do another items supplement. But what? I really love the trinkets in the Player’s Handbook . I turn to that collection of 100 miscellaneous miscellany during character creation and for unusual rewards, purloined loot, or unexpected finds during the game. (See part 1 and part 2 of an earlier post on my blog for other ways I use trinkets in game.) I also love the c...

The Slothfinger Diaries - Entry 1

Image
I've started playing in a new campaign of Dungeons and Dragons and the DM suggested that we write up how our characters feel about the closing encounter of session 1. So, I put together the following. I'll probably post more of these as the game goes on, just for fun. They're sort of stream-of-consciousness too, so c ontinue at your own risk. The Slothfinger Diaries An arresting account of the astounding achievements of an audacious adventurer. Containing much merry making, minimal murder, and maximum mayhem. Complete and unabridged with appendix, a smattering of helpful visual aids, and the personal approval of the Slothfinger Society, that marvelous collective of fans, frenemies, and fiendish busy-bodies devoted to documenting the life and times of Slothfinger Baeruran, the forest gnome horizon walker; an all around good, but slightly chaotic, sort of character. Entry 1: Adventure Actually Whenever I get lackadaisical with the state of the world, I think ...

Trickfinger Folkor (Divine Prankster

Image
Hello all. Well, another two weeks has zipped by and here I am once again with another gnome non-player character. This is a divine prankster, a gnome prestige class that appeared in Races of Stone , by David Noonan, Jesse Decker, and Michelle Lyons (2004).  Enjoy! Trickfinger Folkor ( TRICK-fin-ger FOLL-core ) "Pull my finger." Trickfinger (CG) is a mercurial, 167-year-old male forest gnome who delights in and excels at imparting wisdom through harmlessly devious pranks. Though a high-ranked cleric of Garl Glittergild, he claims no direct affiliation with any specific temple; neither does he call any one burrow his home. Rather, he sees himself as belonging to all temples and to all burrows, traveling only where Glittergold leads and staying only for as long as Glittergold wills. He offers the usual cleric services wherever he goes but he specializes in the “noble-has-no-clothes” and the “too-big-for-one’s-nose” life lessons. These lessons always come in the f...

Sourwind Hedskor (Gnome Alchemist)

Image
Here's another gnome NPC to use in your campaigns. Enjoy! Sourwind Hedskor (sour-WIND HEAD-score) “Separately, any one of these components could strip the skin off your face in a heartbeat. Combine them in exact proportions and you get a bracing beverage that will tickle your nose and make you the life of any party. Wait! Did I already add the toe-wort?" Sourwind (NG) is an awkward, 52-year-old, female rock gnome who channels the energy that most gnomes spend on socializing, eating, and pranking into alchemical research and experimentation instead. She runs a cluttered alchemist’s shop called Potions Plus where she concocts a variety of intoxicants, restoratives, fragrances, and other alchemical curiosities. Some are effective. Some are hokum. A small number are quite popular and always in demand. Almost all were accidental discoveries. Sourwind and her siblings all suffer from silent but particularly foul flatulence, the unfortunate result of an unwise prank he...

Muttchops Welber (Barber)

Image
As promised, here is another gnome NPC, along with role-playing tips and hints at how to use him in your campaign. The end of this post includes another gadget built using my Epic Gnomish Inventing supplement available from the DMs Guild. Enjoy! Muttchops Welber (MUTT-chops well-BURR) "Nothing says more about you than the hair on your head and the whiskers on your chin." Muttchops (N) is a worldly, 201-year-old, male forest gnome who prides himself on the elegantly extravagant hair and beard styles he creates for his clients. Eminently concerned with appearances, he constantly re-imagines his own thick locks and sweeping beard into works of art. He routinely uses illusionary magic to accentuate both; his favorite trick is to make his beard twinkle like a star-filled night sky. He operates a shop called Hair Affair out of his home burrow but also frequents carnivals, festivals, fairs, and other gatherings in a princely, mobile salon. These excursions help him keep ...
