Battlespring Umbodoben (Construct Figther)

Image
This post is a bit early, but I figured why not publish it since it's ready to go. This is another gnome NPC. It might be off the beaten path, but I thought it was a neat idea.  Battlespring Umbodoben ( BATTLE-spring um-BOW-da-bin ) "Nothing will stop this lovely once I've installed the full scale version of my fire infused clockwise momentified water cooled long biter hyperdrill extension encasement unit and reinforced the armor plating with this here dragon scale." Battlespring (N) is a competitive, 66-year-old, male rock gnome who enjoys a good brawl as much as he enjoys tinkering. It should come as no surprise then that he is devoted to the gnome sport of construct fighting, an inventively brutal pastime that pits clockwork inventions against each other in no-holds-barred pit-fight matches for fun, profit, and inebriation. His artificial champions have won a respectable number of bouts but he has not yet qualified for Regionals or any other champion...

Skyfell, My Homebrew D&D Campaign

Image
Welcome to Skyfell “Beyond this land be uncharted skies infested with nightmares.” This is the only truth a traveler will find at no cost when risking respite in the knavish airship harbor known as Highwater. It can be heard from every pirate, mercenary, adventurer, outcast, and rogue skulking about the shady taverns and inns that litter its sprawling urban landscape. A few drinks might summon a tall tale from the talkative; a warning about the gargantuan sky monsters that sail out of The Tempest to ruin the bodies and souls of the unfortunate for example or a yarn about a vast treasure jealously guarded by tribes of feral gnomes and tree-hugging firbolgs on one of the thousands of islands of the Piruna Fields. A few coins tossed into the mix might manage to loosen foolish lips, bringing light to a bit of political intrigue, lost lore, or arcane secrets best left to the shadows. Such indiscretions, however, are likely to earn an arrow in the back, a dagger through the throat, or...

Muttchops Welber (Barber)

Image
As promised, here is another gnome NPC, along with role-playing tips and hints at how to use him in your campaign. The end of this post includes another gadget built using my Epic Gnomish Inventing supplement available from the DMs Guild. Enjoy! Muttchops Welber (MUTT-chops well-BURR) "Nothing says more about you than the hair on your head and the whiskers on your chin." Muttchops (N) is a worldly, 201-year-old, male forest gnome who prides himself on the elegantly extravagant hair and beard styles he creates for his clients. Eminently concerned with appearances, he constantly re-imagines his own thick locks and sweeping beard into works of art. He routinely uses illusionary magic to accentuate both; his favorite trick is to make his beard twinkle like a star-filled night sky. He operates a shop called Hair Affair out of his home burrow but also frequents carnivals, festivals, fairs, and other gatherings in a princely, mobile salon. These excursions help him keep ...

Hooked on Gnomes Part 10

Image
This is it! I set out to create a list of 100 gnome encounters and this is the final installment of that collection! I hope you've enjoyed my random musings on possible gnomish adventures. Maybe you've even used a few of them! If you have, I'd love to hear about it. As always, check out my previous posts for the earlier hooks. From here, I'm planning on presenting a series of NPCs covering a wide range of backgrounds, races, classes, and uses. I'll probably also start posting some NPCs from my own campaigns as well. I've got a couple in mind that I'd like to share. Oh, and in case you are or want to follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Tumblr, I've changed my profile names so that they are consistent across all three. So, basically, look for hokumsean on any of them and you should find me. Okay, on to the encounters! 91. An entity claiming to be a gnome deity has taken to visiting a nearby gnome holy site. Opinion is split as to whether the gr...

Hooked on Gnomes Part 9

A Collection of Gnome Encounters You'll Not Soon Forget Sorry I have not posted in such a long time. I was on an extended business trip to New Zealand and had a lot to take care of when I returned. One nice thing that happened on this trip was that I had an opportunity to jump in on a D&D game at a game store in Auckland. They were welcoming and encouraging. Good times. But enough of that. It's time for some more Gnome encounters! More gnomes. More encounters. Jump on the band wagon! Use them as side quests or as full story arcs. This is the ninth installment. There will be one more installment and I'll be all done. Check out my previous posts for the earlier hooks. 81. A string of robberies plague the local shops. At every theft, rare mushrooms that are grown in a local gnome burrow are left behind in place of the stolen item. 82. As part of a festival celebration, a group of gnomes beg a member of the party to offer his or her services for one day as...

A Collection of Gnome Encounters You'll Not Soon Forget Ladies and gentlemen! Back for another repeat performance! Gnome encounters for fun and profit! Yep. Gnomes. That's what I said. Same old, same old here. Read them. Enjoy them (or not, I'm not the boss of you). Use them as side quests or as full story arcs. This is the eighth set of ten encounters. Check out my previous posts for the earlier hooks. The Encounters (71-80) 71. Two identical gnomes are locked in a cage with the mark of the gnome god Garl Glittergold*. They are dressed in identical clothes which are tattered and soiled in the exact same way. They both beg to be released, each pleading their innocents and accusing the other of heinous crimes. A pile of gems sits between them. 72. The party finds a group of gnomes who are ill-prepared for their adventures. They won't return home until they complete their mission...which by strange fate is the same as the party's. ...

A Collection of Gnome Encounters You'll Not Soon Forget Oh my! More gnomes. More encounters. More gnome encounters! You know the routine. Check these out. Enjoy them.. Use them as side quests or as full story arcs. This is the seventh set of ten encounters. Check out my previous posts for the earlier hooks. The Encounters (61-70) 61.  A pair of gnome miners claims to have struck a rich deposit of gemstones but cannot extract it because they accidentally released a monster that has long been imprisoned deep inside the earth and it now stalks the mine's passages. 62. A small, nut-shaped vehicle that has obviously taken damage is anchored just off shore. A pair of gnomes in sailor clothes pull broken clockwork out of a device mounted to the back of the vehicle, arguing as they do so.  63. The elder of a gnome clan is in search of a few good adventurers to figure out who swapped the clan's most prized gem with a high-quality fake. 64. Residents of an isolated...

A Collection of Gnome Encounters You'll Not Soon Forget Yep, more gnome adventure hooks are here! While they were written with Dungeons and Dragons in mind, they can be used in any gnome-friendly setting. These encounters can be used either as side quests or as full story arcs. This is the sixth set of ten encounters. Check out my previous posts for the earlier hooks. The Encounters (51-60) 51. A scraggly gnome in heavy work clothes stumbles toward a member of the party. The goggles he or she wears whir as the lenses periscope in and out. "You're the one," they say. "And you appear to be real. Quickly now. We must act quickly if this is to work." 52.  A small fishing village is abuzz with stories of a metallic sea monster that hunts its fleet and destroys vessels with beams of light and fire that shoot from its eyes. It is said a sea gnome rides its back with devilish glee. 53. The party startles a gnome who is fussing with an object att...
