Character Concept Package - Gnome Toy Maker

Character Concept Package

The character concept package is a collection of backgrounds, feats, equipment, and other role playing ideas related to a single concept. Materials in a package can be used by any character of any class. Though a particular concept might be race related, they can generally be used by any race as well.

These packages are an idea I've been kicking around for a while now. I'm posting the first one here for beta testing and feedback. Eventually, I'll be publishing a final product on DMsGuild. I look forward to constructive feedback.

Gnome Toy Maker

Background

Your imagination is rather fanciful, even for a gnome. That whimsy fills every aspect of your life, from the shoes on your feet to the cap on your head, the food and drink you prefer, and your general outlook on life. That energy shines the brightest in your tinkering. Your inventions are as unique, and flamboyant, as you. Though you can build just about anything, you focus on toys. Big toys. Little toys. Simple toys. Intricate toys. It doesn't matter. It's almost a compulsion. But that's okay because your work never fails to bring a smile to even the hardest of dispositions. And what could be more important than bringing a little joy to the world?

Skill Proficiency: History, Insight
Tool Proficiency: two artisan tools of your choice
Equipment: set of flamboyant clothes, two artisans tools (two of your choice), pouch of 5gp

Feature : Guaranteed Delivery

You are part of a vast courier network comprised of individuals and organizations from all walks of life. You can tap into this network at any inn or tavern that sits on a trade route, main roadway, or city of medium size or larger. You might also find a contact on less well traveled routes.
Your membership entitles you to free standard delivery of messages and packages as long as doing so doesn't put the network and/or its members in danger. These deliveries will almost always reach their destination and do so in a reasonable amount of time. For a small fee, you can get (mostly) guaranteed and/or expedited shipping. For a little more you can request covert deliveries, deliveries of dangerous or illegal materials, or deliveries that will put couriers in danger, such as to a war zone, unfriendly territory, deadly dungeon, and so forth. As a member, you might also be called upon to make a delivery or be part of the delivery chain. You of course get paid for your efforts. Turning down such an assignment, however, can get you kicked out of the network.

Suggested Characteristics

Maybe your eccentricities are just a persona you've carefully nurtured over the years. Or perhaps you really are as jovial as others perceive you. Regardless, folks meeting you for the first time find your behavior either appallingly annoying (and you in need of a lesson in reality) or delightfully charming (and your presence an absolute must at any shindig). There really is no middle ground when it comes to you and first impressions. You don't let these opinions deter you though. All that matters is spreading joy through your tinkering.

Magic Items

Just In Time Tool Kit

Wondrous item, uncommon
This hardened leather satchel is small enough to be attached to a belt. It contains 4 soft-leather rolls, each engraved with stylized (usually gnomish) representations of various tools.
Use an action to unfurl one of the rolls and conjure a tool kit of your choice. A conjured kit vanishes at dawn the following day but you can banish at any time you like. The kit recharges 1d4 used rolls daily at dawn.

Mazinix's Mender

Wondrous item, uncommon
This unusual device is best described as an awkward cross between a screwdriver, a wrench, and a spork. Its deceptively ordinary quality makes it practically indistinguishable from the mundane tools found in any tool kit.
The Mender has 4 charges and restores 1d4 spent charges daily at dawn. Use an action to strike a single damaged or broken item no larger than 5 feet in any dimension, such as a cart with a broken wheel, a smashed statue, or shattered sword. At least 3/4 of the object must be present. Over the span of one minute, the item will repair itself, leaving no trace of the former damage.
The Mender can physically repair magic items and constructs but cannot restore magic to such items.

Maker's Stamp

Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)
This is a four-inch long, half-inch wide, steel tool for stamping items with a maker's mark. The shape and style of the mark is determined as part of attunement.
The Maker's Stamp has 7 charges and restores 1d6 +1 charges daily at dawn. Use an action to expend one or more charges and stamp the mark on any object, magical or mundane. For up to one hour for each spent charge, gain an intuitive sense of the object's location. For the duration, you gain advantage on all Wisdom (Perception), Wisdom (Survival), and Intelligence (Investigation) checks you make to find the object. Only one object at a time can be marked. You can cause the mark to vanish at will.

Equipment

Wheeled Workshops

Wheeled workshops are specialized wagons with enough room for a collection of tools, a store of raw materials, storage for finished goods, and other equipment a tinker might need while on the road. They come in a variety of sizes.
Light - Two tool sets of your choice with limited supplies and limited storage.
Medium - Three tool sets of your choice with full supplies, storage for several finished products (depending on their size), and a fold-out bunk.
Goliath - Four tool sets of your choice with extensive supplies and storage, a sleeping compartment, and a simple storefront.

Feats

Efficient Maker

You have an inspiring knack for repurposing just about any materials to meet your crafting needs. You gain the following benefits:
  • Increase your Dexterity score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • When using crafting tools for which you have proficiency, you can cut in half the overall cost of what you're making.
  • You have advantage on any of the following skill checks you make to locate or gather crafting materials: History, Investigations, Nature, Survival.

Obsessive Fabricator

When you're focused and motivated nothing can stop you from doing your job. You gain the following benefits:
  • Increase your Constitution score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • Your crafting takes half the time it normally takes as long as you have proficiency in the required crafting tools.
  • When crafting, you can add up to a +10 modifier to any crafting tool check for which you have proficiency. Regardless of whether that check succeeds, you must make a Constitution saving throw against a DC of 5+the modifier. For example, if you added +3 to a Smith tools check, your DC would be 8. If you added 8 to a Tinker tools check your DC would be 13. Upon a failed save, you take one level of exhaustion.

Perfect Gift Giver

You are well attuned to the thoughts and feelings of others. You gain the following benefits:
  • Increase your Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • You gain proficiency in the Insight skill. If you are already proficient in the skill, you add double your proficiency bonus to checks you make with it.
  • When you are crafting a piece of equipment, a weapon, or any other item to give/sell to a specific celestial, fey, fiend, giant, or humanoid other than yourself, you can use your action to try to gain insight about the receiver. The item can be either beneficial or detrimental. You must have either met or observed the individual to do this. For an unwilling target, make a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by the target’s Charisma (Deception) check. No such check is needed for a willing target. If your check succeeds or if your target is willing, you gain advantage on tool checks for making that item for that individual until the end of your next long rest.

Jack of All Trades

You gain proficiency in 3 crafting tools of your choice. If you are already proficient in the tool, you add double your proficiency bonus to checks you make with it.

Master Imitator

You have an unusually keen attention to detail that allows you to intuit the underlying principals of any item you examine. You gain the following benefits:
  • Increase your Intelligence score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • You gain proficiency in the Investigation skill. If you are already proficient in the skill, you add double your proficiency bonus to checks you make with it.
  • Use your action to make an Intelligence (Investigations) check to examine how a piece of equipment, weapon, or other item was made. You must have proficiency in at least one crafting tool that was used to make the item. Upon success, you gain a +5 modifier whenever crafting a copy of that item. The copy can be an exact duplicate or have minor variations, such as color, flourishes, or other cosmetic differences that do not affect its purpose or use.
