5e Conversion: Fallout Death Tambo

5e Conversion: Fallout Death Tambo

If you've been following me on Instagram (see below), you know that I have an addiction to Fallout in general and to Fallout 76 specifically. If you've been reading this blog, you know that I like mash-ups, converting characters, items, and concepts from other intellectual properties and franchises into 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons characters, items, and concepts. I've been having fun with the Avatar fauna conversions. I've even done a Grinch conversion. I'm not sure why it took me this long to figure out I could do some conversions from Fallout as well.

As a very cool sidebar, someone did do a 5e ruleset for Fallout called Fifth Edition Fallout. I even did a couple of actual-play live streams with Scorched Dice where I played a slightly neurotic Mr. Handy. The game is quite fun. You most definitely must give it a try.

But I digress. My point is that I am now going to be doing a few conversions for Fallout into Dungeons and Dragons setting (in contrast to creating a Fallout game using the 5e ruleset). And to that end, here is my first offering.

Death Tambo
Source: Fallout Game Series

Death Tambo
Weapon, rarity varies (requires attunement by a bard)

The death tambo is a magical tambourine that has been modified to double as a martial weapon. As a martial weapon, it does 1d4 slashing damage.

Some might classify the death tambo as an instrument of the bards (see the Dungeon Masters Guide), though others who would be aghast at such a suggestion. Regardless, a creature that attempts to play it without being attuned to it must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or take 2d4 psychic damage.

As a bard, you can use the death tambo as a focus. You can also use an action to play the instrument and cast one of its spells. Once the instrument has been used to cast a spell, it can't be used to cast that spell again until the next dawn. The spells use your spellcasting ability and spell save DC.

When you use the death tambo to cast a spell that causes targets to become charmed on a failed save, the targets have disadvantage on the saving throws. This effect applies whether you are using the instrument as the source of the spell or as a spellcasting focus.

All death tambos have the following spells: fly, invisibility, levitate, protections from evil and good. Each death tambo has additional affects depending on its kind, per the following.

Blood Eagle (rare): Additional spells crown of madnessdetect thoughts, dissonant whispers, Tasha's hideous laughter.

Deathclaw (very rare): +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Overseer (very rare): Additional spells Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion, teleportation circle, tiny servant (6th level), unseen servant.

Protectron (uncommon): Additional spells fog cloudgreaseprotection from energy (lightning only).

Raider (rare): Additional spells absorb elements (3rd level), enemies abound, flame arrows.

Responder (uncommon): Additional spells cure wounds, mending, messageprotection from poison.

Steel Brother (rare): Additional spells command, crusader's mantle, heroism, magic circle.

Wastelander (uncommon): +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Yao Guai (rare): +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

I hope you enjoy this idea. If you use any of these, I'd love to hear about it.

Enjoy!
